Weekly Round-Up

Weekly Round-Up is where I collect all of my personal posts and favorite snippets from various web sites like Facebook and Tumblr.  If you follow me on other sites, this may be redundant.

This week I signed up for a Read-a-thon

I was fascinated by these photos: "The Century Chest is a time capsule buried by the Ladies Aid Society and the First Lutheran Church in downtown OKC on April 22, 1913. Exactly 100 years later, on April 22, 2013, the Century Chest was opened and the contents were presented to the citizens of Oklahoma City."

The new Doctor was announced! It's Peter Capaldi.
I love that he's older!
I hated Matt Smith.
I can't wait for the new season.

And now for this week's posts:

After a few nights of insomnia, I finally got a good night's sleep. I've already swept a few rooms, started laundry, and had breakfast (which was really left-overs from Los Frijolitos). Now I've got a cup of tea, and I'm about to get this week's lesson plans done (school starts tomorrow!). After that I have to clean the house (ugh!).
I hope you all have a great Sunday!

This photo (the one with the tea cup in the previous post) basically sums up my week. I was sick almost all week with a chest cold I caught at the doctor’s office. Don’t you hate that? I went to get my prescriptions updated and brought home more than I bargained for. I’m all better now, just in time to start school tomorrow. I’m ready. Summer has become boring. It’s time to get back to a regular routine.

My grandfather once paid to have our family history traced. The earliest ancestor they were able to find was a little orphan boy arriving at the Port of New Orleans from France, with our family name sewed into the back of his coat.  This was my great-great grandfather (perhaps it’s 3 “greats"- I’m not positive).
Whenever I’m near this statue I think of him and wonder  if he once stood on that same spot.
I also wonder about his life- how he came to be orphaned, and how scared he must have been alone on that voyage.

I think insomnia must be common in women of a certain age.  There are three other women on my Facebook feed right now complaining because they can’t sleep.  And there are women that I don’t know (their friends) also up and responding.  Many of us have even taken sleep aids and are still unable to sleep.   It sucks!  Are any of you ladies in the same boat?
I’ve always been a night owl, but lately I go through about a week every month where I can’t sleep at all.  I’m so sick of it.

I think the replies to this post confirmed my suspicions.

I hate it when medicine that is clearly labeled “non-drowsy" makes me incredibly sleepy.  Since it’s already 10 pm, I guess I won’t fight it.  .

Wool by Hugh Howey is awesome.  If you haven’t read it, you should give it a try.  I read the omnibus last year.  I now have the other books in my TBR pile.

My grandfather used to have a picture similar to this in his living room. He’d ask us what we saw when we looked at it. All I ever saw was the lady in the mirror.  My cousins always saw a skull, and not the lady.  I never understood- I thought they were crazy-  until one day I finally saw the skull. After that it always creeped me out.

I discovered Night Vale this week.

Apologies for all the “Welcome to Night Vale" spam.  I’ve recently discovered it and it is awesome.
From now on I’ll limit my posting to my fandom blog.

This is a camera bag!  My Canon Rebel needs this.  If only I had $165 lying around. :-/

When did my youth slip away from me? I suddenly thought. It was over, wasn’t it? Seemed just like yesterday I was still only half grown up.
